It is not necessary to have your dog shower once a month. A dog with short hair living in house does not need frequent showing. It is not only unnecessary but also not recommended as showering eliminates skin oil that protects the skin naturally leading to over dry skin or dandruff.  

 Do not have your dog shower just because he is “smelly” as dog usually have body smell but it is not too strong. The strange smell is probably caused by some abnormality else than his unhygienic. If your dog has strong undesired smell, check his mouth, ears, and anal. His teeth problem may cause strong smell and ear or anal infection also cause strong smell. Do not have him showered to clean the odor because he should be diagnosed by veterinarian.  

If finally you decide that your dog must have shower, you should prepare a shower place and tools such as shower tub for small dog, rubber sheet to prevent slippery, etc. if your dog is over-sized, the best way is to have him showered at a playground or large area in your compound. You can use shampoo and rubber tube. Have him showered in a warm, sunny day or he will be shivering because of cold water. His body is able to dry easily through exposing to sunlight. If you have him showered in house, use quite warm water and pour warm water in shower tub to his knee level.

Before make him soak in water, comb his hair thoroughly and add mineral oil into his eyes each for one drop (use eye dropper) in order to prevent irritation caused by soap. Pour water over his body, add little amount of shampoo on his back and massage to clean deep to his skin. Do not forget to clean his under chin area, both legs and stomach and rinse thoroughly in order to prevent contamination which may cause irritation later. Let him flutter to eliminate excessive water from his hair and pat dry.

If your dog is small size, use your dryer to dry his hair through warm air only. However, you have to tolerate with his crying voice.

 While having him showered, check his skin all over for any irritation sign or wound that needs treatment and eliminate fleas.
